Gifts from the Circle of Friends

This post is written by Susan Ripley

At the end of Texas Party at the orphanage, we were able to present each child with a personal gift - a tote bag with matching pajama bottoms, t-shirt, towel and toiletry items. The great thing about these gifts is that each one was unique in color/pattern so that no two were alike. Another incredible thing about these gifts is that they were each sponsored by someone in Texas - families / kids / individuals. Every gift had a letter from their NEW FRIEND - the person who had sponsored the gift.

Each child was able to pick out their own gift (although they weren't exactly sure what they were picking - only that it was a surprise to be given to them later). They each took their time to find just the right one.

Then, one at a time, the team leaders called each child's name to come to the front and receive their gift. As each name was called the anticipation increased. Finally, everyone had a gift and the countdown began. As they all opened their gifts, it was so neat to watch their faces as they carefully examined each item. What was even better, was when they found the letter from their new friend and began to read it.

It was so amazing to see how thrilled they were - it was like Christmas! Some children quickly opened their gift and then ran to find a safe place for it in their room. Other children took their time to inspect and admire each indiviudal item. And still others quiety sat and observed the rest of the group, waiting for a more private time to explore their gift.

Our team was able to walk around the room and share more with each child about the person who had given them their gift.

The night ended some of the kids came back downstairs to proudly show us their new pajamas.
And the next day we were treated to a special dance by three of the older girls who simply wanted to say 'thanks'.

The next day, when the children went to camp, several of them carried their new bags.
And some of the children just stayed in their pajamas during the day.

But the best part was when the caregivers who were taking a group of children to camp told us how grateful they were that we were so thoughtful to give such practical things to the children. They said, "Now our kids won't look poor at camp." That just broke my heart.

A big THANK YOU to Jennifer Fuchs who organized the Circle of Friends project. Many thanks to the ladies who spent many hours cutting and sewing the pajamas bottoms and tote bags - they were beautiful! And a special thanks to all the FRIENDS who sponsored the gifts. In the next few weeks each FRIEND will be receiving the name and a picture of the child who received your gift. Our hope is that you will continue to pray for your new friend.
